I use bream on most hooks. So far I've got 9 cypress trout and 4 catfish. The 5 lb 2oz cat in this video was from previous night while last night I put out a couple hooks with magic bait and got a small catfish for next door neighbor (she likes the little catfish best)

Have not spent much time crappie fishing - been too busy - plus when I do fish I need to catch bigger bream for 'flathead' bait. My neighbor now has 3 flathead in his pen - and his line is only half a block from my line (all I catch are channels)

When fishing from dock / bank I use a jig with a squirmin grub - and a cork set 1 -1.5' deep (water is shallow here so use different set up than in boat / channel)

Reel 'dead slow' - sometimes stop and 'twitch' but try to keep motion in the grub tail

Crappie fishing is 'off and on' - some days you catch 10-12 an hour then they stop biting - next day may only catch 1-2. Neighbors to my North - fish a couple hours a day (after work) - neighbors to my South fished a few hours - on two days (work late). I fish a couple hours a day for crappie but been taking out time to bream fish for trotline bait. If I don't get a crappie in short time - I switch to bream fishing.
Summary: Crappie move in and out - if you're around when they swing bye - you have fun - otherwise go eat supper or go bream fishing (Trotline size always bite)

Crappie are moving around in shallow water but not holding in one place so I was lucky on Sunday afternoon to pick up 13 crappie around 2:30PM - 3:30PM then at 3:45PM while my neighbor started to fillet them - I got 3 more before he could finish. Then he joined me and we both got 4 more apiece but we held them until Tuesday to clean them (along with a couple more from yoyo's) - rambling - when they are biting you better catch them - cause they move out and are gone and may not return for days

Decided to check for crappie - put out 6 yoyo's on fishing pier on Sunday / Monday - March 1 - using minnows

Results slow but the full moon is working - on clear nights and early AM

Sunday - 3 crappie (5" - 7" - 9") - 1 bass (1.5 lbs - size neighbor likes - so I kept the bass) - let the crappie go

Monday/Tuesday - 1 crappie 10"
(just at dark saw a lot of shad jumping - something chasing them)

Tuesday/Wednesday - 2 crappie 9" & 11.5" - as of 4AM - when I re baited
(Had re baited at 10:30PM after something stripped all yoyo's)

Summary: 4 fish in pen and yoyo's baited under the still full moon - it's beautiful out there but COLD (having coldest winter in long time - so wasn't expecting to do much fishing this time of year any way

xmas 2009: Some people were looking for snow - I was up most of the night watching the water rise - hoping it would not make it to my front door. Going to have to put on duck hunting boots and see if my boats are still floating in the boat house

Birds eating shad

Birds - mainly American white pelicans are eating tons of shad that are around my place. No matter ! - cause with so many shad in the area - the fishing has been impossible - plus it's been too cold for an old softy like me

For past week any where from a couple dozen to about 100 white pelican's have been eating hundreds of shad a day - I have about an hour of video but I hate long video so I cut out 2 minutes (no video should be more than a couple minutes IMHO :)

Still had luck on 27th 28th 29th but 30th was rainly cold and no fish - then on Dec 1 (Tues - very slow but got 8-9 crappie and only 3 were keepers). Now past week the shad have taken over i.e. there are thousands and thousands of shad so the crappie are not hungry. Still catch a few yellow bass but nobody wants them

Expecting another cold spell maybe it'll run off the shad so the crappie will be hungry again but in past years the crappie have not 'returned' - I think they move to deeper water

Not expecting to catch but a few crappie a week in this time of year (combination of I'm not going out in the cold and crappie are not concentrated in front of my house anymore = bummer :(

Slow but some keepers

Last few days, the crappie fishing has been slow - at least the 'keeper size' have been hard to 'come by'

Still catch some too many yellow bass and small bream while trying to find the keeper size crappie but even those have slowed down e.g. all fishing slowed down with the lake 1 ft low

Typical day - get about 12-15 fish but usually only 5-6 keeper crappie

Today my fish pen had 16 fish and about 4 were really nice and other dozen were 9-10" i.e. most were small keepers. My neighbors had that many or more but they had a few that were on the 'smaller size'

Bottom line: not much to brag about so not posting or making video - but on other hand slowly putting some crappie / fish fry's in the freezer of neighbors.

Dang Fat Crappie

Baited a few yoyo's on fishing pier and at 8PM - checked them and found a 13" Crappie that had swallowed the hook - so I had to clean it - which sucks cause it takes as long to gather knife - bring bucket / fish in the house - clean it - vacuum pack it and clean up - I spent 45 minutes on one fish - I could have cleaned 40 fish in this amount of time in the day time i.e. dang fish shouldn't swallow the hook after dark cause they are pain in butt to clean one at a time.

BTW: this one was fat for a 13" crappie - cause it's exact weight was 1 lb 6.5oz - I've had 15" crappie that were only 1.5 lbs but this 13" was thick n heavy for it's length.

Addendum: Crappie fishing has been 'spotty' - for example today was decent day - got over 2 dozen crappie but most were 8-9" and I only kept ones 10" and larger - which means I only kept half a dozen crappie :(

Yesterday was about same story but they were only biting for about an hour (4 keepers) - while today they were biting for about 2 hours.

Because of loss of dear friend been emotional e.g. I've been down in dumps and not really interested in fishing much. So I didn't even try fishing today until 4PM - and I picked up 4 really nice crappie in very short time. I also had one really big one that was 1.5 or 2 pounds that got off when I tried to lift it over the fishing pier rail (should have had net in my hand but didn't)

Anyway - the big ones may have been here all day but nobody was fishing

Crappie slow - catfish small

For past several days, Crappie fishing has been crappy i.e. slow - with only a few keepers a day

So I started fishing a couple hours a day for catfish - which is also slow but got 3 catfish yesterday on rod n reel and 2 on yoyo's over night (along with a 12" crappie on yoyo) - most around a pound - but one was 2 lbs - another 1.5 lbs

I gave away these fish to a neighbor who is slowing filling his freezer

Need to get some work done around place today / tomorrow but a very close friend passed away last night and I'm depressed - in a I don't care mood so maybe I'll go fish and try to clear my head

Forgot - neighbors were fishing again Sunday morning (I'm lazy) and they got another dozen or so - most larger than 10"

But they shut down in afternoon when I 'finally started fishing for real' - that's what I get for being late :(

I forgot to mention they were biting Sunday AM - mainly cause it wasn't me catching them.

Then Monday - when I got off my lazy butt they were not biting - but see prevous post - cause Tuesday they were biting again (some overnight on yoyo's)

More Crappie to clean

Between neighbor / neighbors son / my pier yoyo's - had a couple dozen NICE size crappie that we cleaned today. After cleaning the 9" crappie over weekend - we not don't keep / clean 9" - we want bigger such as 10-11" minimum (which is what we cleaned today i.e. no more 9" - the fillets are not worth the 'work' - also we trying to pick out the 'thick' 10" i.e. 10" that are thick body make fillets worth the effort

Summary: Still catching crappie in shallow water - along bank in front of my house and despite fact the larger (keeper size) are hard to come by - we cleaned more than a couple dozen today

BTW: I still don't claim to be a 'serious crappie fisherman' - I'd rather catch catfish - and they are bigger easier to clean IMHO - but I do enjoy Crappie fishing when they come to my front door and I don't have to go looking (working) to get them

Forget Football

This afternoon - I got tired of watching football games and waiting on Razorback game so I went fishing along the bank in front of my house - well I got at least 20 crappie but was only keeping 9" and larger - so I kept 13 (largest was 14")

Well I was tired so I took a break while a couple of neighbors started fishing and they started catching crappie - many of them 7-8" that they also threw back. Then finally I went back out to fish some more and guess what - the neighbors started catching fish and the spot where I had been fishing - went dead. Ended up they caught about 30 fish and kept 14 - largest 13" and smallest keeper was closer to 10" i.e. they got my fish to move to them and I didn't get a bite

Oh well it was a great day - first I had my turn and would have had a limit if I kept the 6-8" that I threw back - then neighbors did same thing but in different spots i.e. crappie left me and went to where my neighbors were fishing

We were using jigs and squirming grub - and a weighted cork

Most of my fish were 5 - 8 ft from the bank - while neighbors got most of theirs 15-20 ft from bank i.e. crappie moved to slightly deeper water when I came back to fish again.

I should have taken photos - was nice mess of fish i.e. 27 nice size - but I gave away the 13 I got to another neighbor and the other 14 are still in the fishing pen (one neighbor is coming back in AM with a friend and try to get enough for a family fish fry i.e. he wants 20-30 more nice size (good luck - I'm planning on sleeping late - besides the crappie today didn't really start biting until 3 PM

Crappie biting a short time - just before dark (6:30PM) - off my fishing pier. Been like this for 5 days and I'm picking up 1 or 2 Crappie on Rod n Reel. Then I put out yoyo's with minnows for after dark and usually pick up 1 or 2 more Crappie (but last night I added a 1.75 lb channel catfish).

Slowly but surely I've put together several 'fish dinners' (mostly for my neighbors but also some for my aunt)

Storms tonight shut me down on rod n reel fishing - but I do have the yoyo's out - just in case another catfish or crappie swim by.

Oh - I forgot - I usually on keep 10" or bigger crappie but two 9" in last few days swallowed the hook.

BTW: Biggest I got was Monday night - in the rain = 14" - it swallowed the hook so I had to clean it in the rain - so today I moved my fish cleaning table inside the boat house.

Keeper a day

Was catching a keeper a day for 3 days - then missed a day. Dang yellow bass still hanging around my pier.

Went looking for catfish - one hour yesterday - got one 1 lb. Day before I got a 1 lb blue and a 1 lb channel i.e. still feeding little catfish and now some of them are blue's

Been bream fishing to catch trotline bait - hoping a big ole flathead will swim near my shallow trotline - catching plenty of bream.

Shad all around my place and was hoping the crappie fish would be 'hot' but the dang yellow bass are everywhere (eating my shad) - so I catch them off my pier instead of crappie

Did manage to get 2 keeper crappie in last two days (and a few smaller ones) - they were not huge i.e. only 9-10". One of my neighbors got 2 keepers and another neighbor had 1 keeper - so we combined them for the 'newest neighbor' so he could have his first fish fry since moving here.

Baited trotline again tonight - but it's still in an unlikely place i.e. I'm still putting trotline in front of my house - instead of taking it to better place and I'm too lazy to run it at night i.e. I bait once before dark and check next day. Others that put their line in deeper (better) place at catching a few big catfish - but so far the big ones haven't found my house :)

forgot to post but got another 2 lb channel (2lb 4oz this time) on Thursday. Also have picked up a couple small (less than a pound) Thursday - Friday / trotline / magic bait. Water still high - spillway gates open - did not waste time rod n reel fishing e.g. lazy - cool weather - high water (no motivations :) :)

Fishing tough with high water and fast current - so baited a few hooks on trotline with magic bait - got two channel cats - one was 3/4 lb (checked wt at 11 oz) and one at 2 lb 6 oz - so cleaned one - let one go. Water still high and more rain coming tonight - so not expecting to fish much for next couple days

2.75 lb Blue Catfish

Been Lazy - didn't report 4-5 small (1 lb) channel that I cleaned this past week - but got over lazy spell and baited yoyo's since lake is high (water deeper at my fishing pier)

Rain - high water - weather front made fishing tough last few days (only got small channel cats) - so last night I baited 5 yoyo's on my fishing pier with Secret-7 / Magic bait - and I got my first Blue catfish in a long time - it was 2 lb 13 oz and I made this video to show the shape of the fins and to explain that you can count the 'splines' to tell difference in a real Blue and a Blue Channel. This Blue had 33 splines and a channel catfish always has less than 30 i.e. 30 to 35 and it's a blue
Also note it's color is very similar to Channel - BUT it does not have any spots on it's belly. BTW: Bigger catfish are ever harder to tell apart cause Channels do not always have spots on the belly - so the count and the shape of the fins (squared off - instead of round / smooth) are positive ways to tell a Blue from a Channel

4 lb Channel Cat - Secret-7

Lately I've used treble hooks with Magic bait on bottom - with Secret-7 on top. Small catfish eat off the Secret-7 but I like 'bigger bait' and mixing the two makes a 'bigger looking Secret-7 bait i.e. Magic bait is just 'filler cause it stays on hook better'
I presoak catfish food and / or dry dog food to use as chum - and sometimes I'm not sure it's working - but when I cut open this catfish belly it was full of the chum I use i.e. I know the chum was working today (sometimes I think the chum attracts to many small catfish but today it got this 4 lb catfish to hang around for me to catch

Addendum: I forgot to mention I make a 'ball' of the presoaked chum - about the size of a softball i.e. use large ball of chum to hold fish in area

Lost big catfish - cleaned 6

My neighbor likes thin small fillet at times (cook fast and more 'fried taste') - so today I kept 1/2 dozen of the small (around 1 lb) and a 2.5 lb for us to clean.

The sad thing is I had a HUGE fish and played it for about 5 minutes before it tore off the hook and made me cuss. I already had the net in my hand and decided to work it up to top - it had made a bunch of deep runs and I was worried it was going to get me hung up - wish I had played it a little longer - cause it was HUGE

Bottom line: I got a 2.5 lb (actual 2 lb 7 oz) to go with 5 small (about 1 lb) channel cats - all on Secret-7 / magic bait

Bad Weather

Cold and rainy but I still managed to battle wind for an hour and got one keeper - 2 lb 9oz - on Secret-7 /magic bait - I forgot to mention the 3.75 lb from yesterday was also on Secret-7 / magic bait

Addendum: A couple of my neighbors went out at 5PM and fished a couple hours and came back with a couple nice cats - one at 5lbs 9oz and other 4 lb 4oz - that they got on night crawlers. I think the place they fish is more out of the wind - sorta shallow (5 ft or so) - i.e. I was fighting the wind to get in deep water / channel - and got smaller catfish :(

Stupid me battled the wind for an hour in AM for 1 baby catfish (too small to keep) - then went back for 2 hours 4-6PM - wind still bad - but a few more baby catfish (10 or 12 but more bait thieves than normal i.e. lost a lot of bait when they nibble with wind blowing - hard to spot them until cork disappears and they get bait.
With wind I wore a jacket for first time this year.

Crappie fishermen didn't seem to be doing much - which surprised me with the much cooler water.

May skip fishing tomorrow - figure the area will have plenty of crappie fishermen - may let them take over lake (or may wait and only fish late in afternoon ?)

In last 3 days - all I've cleaned are little catfish - around a pound or a little less. Neighbor still likes little ones so we've been cleaning a couple each day. On most days I get about a dozen (15 one day) - so I just pick out a couple for her. Still fishing a couple hours a day - still catching fish on magic bait / Secret-7 combination (easier to keep Secret-7 on hook for the little bait thieves.

Fishing has been slow - but catch a few 1 lb or so - then today kept catching a bunch of small ones - so I kept 8 that were around a pound or better - and a guy gave me a 2 lb 4oz - so I had catfish to clean. I threw back all but 3 of the small ones i.e. only cleaned 4 - which will make two 'messes' for little lady next door.

When the little ones were biting fast today - there was 3 times that I had two fish on the two rods i.e. they would all move thru and bite at same time.

I only fished about 1.5 hours cause the wind was terrible and I waited until almost 5:30 - hoping wind was going to die down - but it didn't :( (and it was getting late cause it gets dark a little after 7PM and I'm slow cleaning catfish :(

How I use Secret-7 (stinky hands)

Photo 3: Items include - box of treble hooks and springs - dough hooks - furry thangs(TM) for brown things that slip over treble hook - rubber bands (line / depth stopper) - pink dip tubes (go over treble hooks -

Photo 4: store magic bait in can with lid - other can is flour with garlic salt mixed in - I put fingers in flour / garlic salt then pick up Secret-7 - then I cover bait with flour / garlic salt to 'shape it' by hand - Windex bottle contains soap and vinegar water - wash cloth is used with lake water most of time but sometimes clean hands with vinegar / soap (btw: soaking hands in hot dish water is best so be good to your wife / lady and wash dishes for her before you try to touch her :) :) :) Bottom line - impossible to completely get rid of smell so using a stick and dough hooks or 'furry thang' is what a smart man does (but I'm not smart - like to use my hands cause I can put a lot more bait on each hook (and I don't care if my hands stink) - btw: auto store hand cleaner - sorta works

Photo 5: Difficult to show but the magic bait covers the bottom of the treble hooks and then tear drop shape Secret-7 is on top - end up with large tear drop shape that doesn't show well in photo. Show two sizes - one on a #4 dough hook and other on a 'plain' #2 treble hook (bigger one)

BTW: Forgot to show paper towels which I spray with vinegar / soap solution a couple times an hour i.e. wash hands very often with wash cloth / lake water - but then use paper towels to 'wipe' / clean hands a few times. Then when get home - sometimes use hand cleaner or soap hands in dish water with 'lots of rubbing' - these extra steps are taken when I plan to go out in public :) :)

Bottom Line: Baiting with magic bait / Secret-7 by hand - is 'double expensive' but makes bigger baits - - takes lot of work - hand soaking if you plan to 'go around others' :) Smart person - uses stick - dough hooks or 'furry thangs' and push bait hold into dip bait - but I would still recommend using garlic salt on bait - either plan or mixed with flour

BTW: I've used magic bait alone and seldom get as many bites as I do with Secret-7 / magic mixed - on most days - but fish are funny - one day they may like Danny King - then chicken livers - then night crawlers. I usually put 3 yoyo's on side of my boat with various types of bait to see if one does better than others - if I find a 'hot bait' - I then switch - but in long run - Secret-7 still out does others that I try. I also watch other fishermen - see what they use and if they catch fish (but I usually get more and bigger fish on Secret-7 /magic bait)

Secret-7 still wins

When catfish are biting fast and furious - Secret-7 still works better than other bait. I used several yoyo lines with various bait and two rods - didn't take long to see that Secret-7 was catching more fish - so I retired the yoyo's and used Secret-7 (with magic bait helping to hold it on hook) - on the two rods

Got at least 40 catfish - about half were around a pound and one was 2 lb. Picked 1/2 dozen of the ones around a pound to clean with the 2 pound - was plenty for neighbors freezer

But by end of day I had to go fishing one more time - got a dozen or so - 1 lb and one that was 1.75 lbs. I cleaned the 1.75 - neighbor has enough that I went back to letting the 1 lb or so go (not to mention the dozen or so that were less than a pound

Summary - got a ton of fish again today - and this time decided to make video i.e. to lazy to make video of all the fish I catch

Finally got to fish = 2 at 1.75lb each

Rain - rain - more rain this week - lake super high - all spillway gates open - fast water - no chance to fish since Tuesday - until today - got a ton of fish but most less than 1 lb - had two keepers to clean - both 1.75 lb - also lost 3 nice ones using night crawler - cause they were harder for little fish to steal - but 2 keepers were on magic bait mixed with Secret-7 - went fishing early e.g. 2 hours were before football game

Summary: Finally had chance to fish again = 2 keepers on magic bait/Secret-7 - night crawlers working but did not have many of them to fish with :( :(

Yesterday - I was getting mad cause I've had bad weather for several days - not just rain to dodge but wind that beats me to death and also 'washes' off my favor (Secret-7) bait

I can sum up past few days - wet / windy - made me skip fishing or only trying for a short time before giving up.

Well I couldn't take it anymore and said I was going to try to fish for at least an hour no matter how much the wind beat up on me ;( It was about 5:30PM Well after 1 hour - I had one bite and was already starting to pack up my bait cans - when - yep you guessed it - I got a bite and grabbed rod and landed a 2 lb 10oz catfish. The bad news was that I had two other lines in the water and as sure as the current and wind had all lines close together - I had a huge mess of tangled lines.

I managed to get my 'real catfish rig' back in action but only after fighting for about 25 minutes to get the mess untangled - so as I started to work on the mess of lines - I got another catfish - almost immediately after getting my rod back in action.

I landed this one 2lb 1oz (I think - not which was next) - so I put rod back in action and forgot about the mess of line for about 10 minutes - at which time I decided the catfish had left so I went back to the mess of line - and yep you guessed it - I got the other catfish 2lb 8oz - and by not I had been out 1.5 hours but was tired (sick and tired of the boat beating me to death - - so I said to hell with it - and quit - cause by now it's 7PM and with the clouds looking more like rain and getting dark - so I came to the house - checked weight of fish - made photos - and decided it would get dark before I could finish cleaning the fish - so I put them in pen. I ended up cleaning them between 'waves or rain' - figuring I wouldn't get chance to fish again today

Summary: Only got about 5 bites and lost one that 'hooked for a short time' - and landed 3 = 2 lb - 2 1/2 lb - 2 5/8 lb :)

Today's fish tale:

The wind was not as bad today but there was more rain and radar kept showing 'more on the way' - so around 4PM - I saw 'forward radar' showing about one hour of no rain - so off I went. Hoping to get in an hour

Today was more work than yesterday - cause I got a couple dozen bites i.e. kept loosing bait to the bait thieves. But I had to stay because while I was fighting the bait thieves - my light weight crappie rod took off and landed in bottom of boat - and when I grabbed it - I had a fight on my hands - it was the 3lb 4oz and that made me go ahead and feed the bait thieves and about an hour later - I was looking one way and the same rod n reel tried to go overboard again - this time it was 2 lb 2oz on the light weight rod

BTW: The wind picked up and I ended up staying 1.5 hours and got a little wet - cause rain kept spitting in spurts after about 1 hour e.g. was lucky I got in 1.5 hours and also lucky it didn't rain as hard as the 'forward radar' indicated.

Summary: Lot of bites today and two hard fighting catfish especially since I got them on 4 lb line and very limber crappie rod. And I didn't get too wet but did get 'beat up by the wind - a little bit in last 30 minutes)

Another slow day - another keeper

Dang fishing was tough / slow again today but I got one keeper = 1 lb 12oz (1.75 lb) - but I didn't get it on rod n reel - I was using different bait on yoyo to try to find something the fish liked - and I got this one on Danny King on a yoyo

I only got 1 other bite - it was on Secret-7 with rod n reel and I got it part way in before it got off (felt like a couple pounds or better)

Summary : two bites - one on Secret-7 / rod n reel and one on yoyo / Danny King that is going to be cleaned tomorrow - bummer day - not much fun to catch one on yoyo

Slow fishing yesterday (Sunday) for my 2 hr fish trip - got 8-10 baby catfish and one about 1 lb (which I let go)

Today (Labor Day - Monday) = Super slow - fished 3 hours - 1 - channel catfish (1 lb 15 oz) - went out at 10AM to see if crappie fishermen were having any luck - they said super slow - but I fished one hour just cause I was already there - didn't get a bite - didn't even lose Secret-7 bait off hook.

Went back for my 2 hour fishing trip at 5PM and the catfish were not biting - so I took the time to rig up an old fly rod for crappie fishing - and I was throwing chum and yellow bass were eating it like crazy - reason I know it was yellow bass I end up catching three of them on the crappie jig that I was playing with

Well I was getting ready to leave after 1.5 hours - cause I had not had a single bite - none - nada . I wasn't paying attention to cork and looked up as the cork was 'swimming away and pulling the rod toward the side of the boat - figured it was baby catfish - but it turned out to be the 2 lb channel cat which had swallowed the hook - all the way to it's belly. Of course I then had to fish 30 more minutes - and did not get another bite - ONE BITE in 3 hours is terrible but lucky this was a greedy / hungry catfish.

The catfish's belly was huge and when I opened it up to get my hook - I found one cube of magic bait (not mine - probably belong to people fishing on bank) - 2 small minnows - 1 small shad - one small crawfish (whole e.g. catfish swallowed it whole) and last but not least some of the catfish food / chum that I had been throwing out e.g. this catfish was full and still wanted the Secret-7 bait I was using - on there was skeleton of another minnow but most of the belly contents were fresh - not even starting to break down yet.

Bottom line the only catfish in the whole lake that was hungry today (eating everything) happen to swim bye my hook - lucky he didn't take my rod n reel over the side :)

Went fishing today and got a ton of small catfish - some almost 1 lb e.g. no real keepers.

But I kept a couple that were almost 1 lb so my next door neighbor could have her fish dinner tomorrow i.e. we cleaned a couple of the small ones but I threw back the rest :)

I've been mixing Secret-7 with other bait partly because I was running low - so Monday I ordered a case of 64 oz (about 28 lbs) - then Monday afternoon I found out that a bait shop (Hacket Jack's) in NLR now is a local dealer (but they were already sold out so it's good I ordered plenty :)

I now have plenty of Secret-7 - so if it comes off the hook easy - I have plenty to re-bait

I went out this AM - just in case it was raining by evening. I was catching so many little ones I lost count - so when the cork started floating (not really going under very far) - I figured it was another little one - and waited then set hook and then I jumped up and said ' Oh My God' - cause the 4 lb Channel was on my crappie / spinning rod n reel which has 4 lb test line. I had a blast playing this mean boy - and was glad when I managed to land it (so I decided to make a video despite fact it was only 1 fish)

BTW: During both fishing trips I must have boated 4 dozen small catfish - I was constantly busy - bring in fish or re-baiting after they stole the bait but it was fun at first (then frustrating that most were little catfish - 1/2 to 1 Lb e.g. too little for me to keep / clean (which is good :) :)

On the 4 lb catfish was during the first hour - that's one reason I fished more hours today than normal e.g. went out twice in one day hoping to find another 4 lb to make my heart race fast again :) :)

BTW: Still not planning on making so many video but this fish was so much fun I had to make a video

These last two channel catfish were fun - I was catching a bunch of little ones and was using the light rod n reel for one setup. The little ones would float the big slip cork so I was lazy watching cork float without ever going under and then decided to check bait - well this 'little one floating the cord' was 2.75 lbs and on the light weight (crappie) rig it felt like a 5 lb fish and I had to reset the drag while working it to boat - good thing I have a strong heart - it took 5 minutes to get the mean catfish in the boat because I was afraid to force it - plus the 'floating bite' fooled me and I never really set the hook - which made me more nervous / cautious about force it.

The other one was a 2 lb 1 oz but on heavy line so no 'racing heart' / nervous breakdown

All bites - were secret-7 - and I decided to put up the light rod n reel - no more stress - I fished with the 10 lb line - so of course I started catching baby catfish again :(

I went this AM - between 10AM - noon - but I would have fished longer than my 2 hours except my stomach decided I needed to come home (hopefully I can get gut under control and go back> Those that know me - understand what happens when I get nervous stomach but I'm going to try to calm my gut and go again later today

P.S. Found out that bait shop (Hacket's Jack) which is 13 miles from me - now carries the Secret-7 bait (after I had already ordered a case from teamcatfish.com to be FedEx tomorrow i.e. already ordered several months worth of bait plus shipping cost to FedEx :(

I'm still fishing about 2 hours a day (usually in late afternoon) - still using stink bait - stink catching a lot ot 1 lb or less that I throw back. But from now on - not going to take time to make video when I just catch one (or 2) in the 2 lb range (the size that I keep and make decent fillets and good eating - for my neighbor - as mentioned in past video)

Sorry but going to be lazy and not always keep up or count the 2 lb range (will 'try' to take time to put on this blog - but not a promise - may only update blog once ever few days and may miss a few keepers (really be lazy)

Still not making video of latest catch cause they are just in the 1.5 to 2 lb range. Yesterday (Saturday) I had a 1 lb (that I let go) and about a 1.5 to 2 lb - that I gave away to people fishing near me (e.g. didn't weight it before I gave it away)

Then today my 2 hr fishing trip only produced one channel cat = 2 lb 6oz (got all these latest on Secret-7 or a mixture where I use magic bait to hold the Secret-7 on the hook i.e. not sure which the catfish liked best Chicken Liver / blood magic bait or the Secret-7 on top of Magic

Anyway - none of the recent catch is worth the time to make a video

I've been fishing in a deep / cool hole / creek channel and doing fine with the HOT days and hot surface temperature - but the last week of rain - cool night - dropped the water temperature all over the lake - so the fish spread you and my 'hot fishing spot' cooled off. I figure another few days of 90+ temperatures and the fish will return to the channel - deeper fishing hole I use (fingers crossed)

I forgot to mention that I was catching little bait thieves - lost count of how many. But I got these 7 keepers and my next door neighbor has plenty to eat for a several days :)

I discovered that the daily bait thieves are little baby catfish (not turtles) - I used a really small hook and got 3 babies before I took off the 'baby hook'

I only got one keeper today (and one yesterday - already been fried :) - both on Secret-7 stink bait.

Again I only fish for 1-2 hours - I figure if they are biting that is plenty of time to catch supper (for little 89 year old next door neighbor :)

Yesterday - didn't fish for catfish (lazy) - today - went out at 6PM - got a baby channel (too little to keep) on magic bait - then a 1 lb 15oz channel on Secret-7 (at 7PM)

Turtles stole liver and most of the stink bait during first hour - then everything stopped biting i.e. from 7PM - 8PM didn't get bites on any type of bait i.e. even turtles were full :(

I got 4 more catfish on stink bait during my daily 2 fishing (relaxation time) trip. Got first one on Magic bait then in first 30 minutes got 3 more on Secret-7 bait. Lost one chicken liver bait but was having lot of bites on Secret-7 so stayed with it. Summary: Catfish were all in first 30 minutes then turtles moved in and the next 1.5 hours were spent feeding the turtles

I've had terrible luck with frozen catalpa worms i.e. never catch anything (except on rare occasion on trotline)

Finally got a 2 lb channel catfish using a frozen catalpa worm (and a circle hook - something I don't use very often)
Summary: Maybe all the stories I hear about catalpa worms are great bait - may have a 'little truth' (but I still like stink bait and liver better)
P.S> heavy rain yesterday - seemed to move the catfish back to shallow water around my fishing pier - may use catalpa worm again tonight (i.e. feed the turtles :)

On Friday: Same as before - got one catfish when I first started fishing - then turtles moved in.
Tried something new - I went bream fishing for 30 minutes before going to feed the turtles - got 1/2 dozen - 4 of them small enough to use as bait. Well turtles didn't even eat / get the two bream I used for bait so I let them go (one died) I was hoping a flathead would swim by but no such luck.
May bream fish and bait trotline soon - getting tired of feeding turtles. I need a new place to fish - to see if I can 'hide' from the turtles :9

Cut my normal 2 hour evening fishing trip short cause I got tired of turtles stealing my bait. I even wrapped the bait (liver and Secret-7) in cheese cloth and the turtles still stole the bait - I swear one big one had a huge grin on his face when he came up to see why I was taking so long to re-bait :(

Of all the bait I lost and bites I got - I don't think a single one was a fish - all were nibbles like a turtle - not even moving the end of the rod or the slip cork

Been hot and/or got trapped in thunder storm - so now doing much - until today. Went fishing for 1.5 hours and kept loosing bait - got several bites where they 'nibbled' off the Secret-7 (even with my new spring setup). Also had one hook with liver and ever time I checked it - bait was gone.

Finally I put a small rubber band on the liver - to make it stay on hook better - and it worked - I got a 3.5 lb channel catfish.

Still have faith in Secret-7 but still having trouble getting it to stay on hook.

Using the 'furry thang' helps keep bait on hook BUT fish either 'nibble' off the dip bait or the do like the other day - when they swallow the hook (I hate that especially if it's little 1 pounder

Been so hot I seldom fish for an hour i.e. can't take the heat. Also the Secret-7 bait will not stay on the hook (trying all types of combinations :(

Today I waited until 7PM and planned to fish an hour at most.

But when I started fishing a guy next to me got a couple catfish within 15 minutes - then they stopped biting for him for about 45 minutes i.e. time for me to quit and I had gotten a single bite. In other words, I was trying to leave but the guy in the next boat got 3 more catfish and lost 3. (He boated 5 - lost 3)

Finally I was leaving mad cause he was using chicken liver fishing on the bottom and my Secret-7 did not get one bite. Then of course, I got a fish = a 4 lb channel catfish - so I had to stay 15 more minutes - and then clean it in poor light.

Summary: Chicken liver = 5 fish (most around 2 lb - one about 3 lb). Secret-7 one 4 lb'er

Getting mixed up - got 3 yesterday (2-1 Secret7 vs Magic) - got 2 day before yesterday (1 - 1) - oh heck I forgot Saturday - got 2 (1-1) - I should keep better records but main thing is Secret-7 is winning and today the only one on Magic bait was the 1 lb - and 8 lbs (total) for Secret7

Raising waxworms and catfish update

Now raising wax worms to catch bream to use on trotline.

Still been catching catfish on stink bait - fishing a couple hours each day and usually get 2 - 3 keepers - just not taking time to update blog or make video

I'm not as 'high' on Secret-7 bait as last post but it's still catching some fish - it's just that chicken liver chicken blood Magic bait has been better the last two days (got 2 on Magic bait yesterday and only one on Secret-7 - but none on catalpa (catawba) worms which I tried for first time this year.

Summary: next door neighbor getting all the catfish I catch cause most are less than 2 lbs
